Eleanor Downs

ELEANOR DOWNS is an original soldier settler farm still operated by a fifth generation farmer born and raised on Kangaroo Island, Nathan Trethewey. With partner Olivia Baker, a concert pianist from Adelaide, they have created Eleanor Downs into a communal place collaborating agriculture, tourism, arts and culture.

AGRICULTURE
Nathan's grandfather was allocated the land under the World War II soldier settlement scheme. Both his grandfather and father ran stock on the land and to this day under Nathan's management continues to be a significant merino sheep and cattle farm on the island.

TOURISM
Eleanor Downs has two farm stays, one in the original early 1950s soldier settlement cottage and the other in a large old farm house. Farm tours and picnic packs are available for tourists to enjoy the serenity of the property. Add to that a new airstrip which welcomes fly-in visitors who have the option to glamp, camp or stay in the cottage.

ARTS AND CULTURE
The Bush Festival started in 2019, bringing Adelaide Fringe acts over to the island. The annual festival is set among hay bales and under the gum trees attracting locals and tourists alike. In 2020 Eleanor Downs hosted the inaugural launch of Guroo Wines and several classical piano concerts. The future for Eleanor Downs holds live art, music, theatre, food and wine events for the local community and visitors to delight in.
